Artificial Intelligence giant OpenAI may have an AI-powered smartphone or smart gadget in the works, which could put the company on a collision course with tech giants including Apple, Samsung Electronics, and Huawei.

The idea of a smartphone running on OpenAI has already sparked a lot of interest in the tech industry, as it’s not just another hardware release, it’s a gesture toward the future. It’s pointing towards a future in which artificial intelligence is the main hub of personal computing, not just an application within a classic phone.

The firm hasn’t actually made any announcement about a device, but the recent developments certainly indicate that something is afoot in the consumer hardware space. OpenAI hit headlines last year when it purchased a design consultancy run by famed Apple designer Jony Ive, for a whopping $6.5 billion. Ive is well known for his work as one of the brains behind the iPhone, iMac and a few of Apple’s most iconic products.

It was immediately assumed that the purchase heralds the start of a whole new class of AI-first devices from OpenAI. OpenAI’s move to integrate into the physical consumer world with one of the world’s respected hardware design teams, marks a future where artificial intelligence will be more entrenched in physical products.

Nonetheless, there is a lot of skepticism. Mobile phones are one of the most challenging sectors to succeed. A few major tech firms tried to go head-to-head with Apple and Samsung in the last 10 years, but none of them were able to make any real headway. The Amazon Fire Phone was short-lived, the Windows Phone platform had not been able to entice users and developers to its platform and Facebook’s effort to make Facebook Home a major player on Android smartphones failed almost as soon as it came out.

AI hardware startups have seen significant failures as well. The AI Pin is an ambitious startup project that was created by Humane Inc. with hundreds of millions of dollars of VC funds and it is supported by Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI. But low performance, low functionality and poor user experience are some of the reasons why the product received bad ratings. The company folded down the road when consumers didn’t warm to the device.

These failures illustrate a tough truth: Innovative hardware is much harder to build than software. Smartphones have already become an integral part of the consumers’ lives for communication, entertainment, payments, navigation, photography, and work. The only way to get users to change that experience, or to replace it, is to have something that is different, but a lot better.

OpenAI might have advantages that past players don’t have, however. With ChatGPT already having a huge user base worldwide, the company is widely seen as the front runner in generative artificial intelligence. OpenAI is one of the most well-known brands in current technology, with millions of users interacting with their AI chatbots every day.

That’s important recognition as consumer trust is key to hardware adoption. Among the strongest contenders for people to pack an AI-first device is OpenAI. The company’s quick pace of innovation and the rising stature of its CEO, Sam Altman, in Silicon Valley also plays a role in the company’s standing.

Another big plus is that Jony Ive and his team will be on board with the design. Elegant design, smooth user experience, and simplicity of the product are always key to Apple’s success, in addition to the powerful technology. I’ve contributed to the development of products that changed the way people interact with tech. With high-end hardware design and cutting-edge AI features, OpenAI has the potential to develop a completely new user experience that traditional smartphones can’t beat.

The future AI device may not even resemble today’s smartphones. Next-generation AI hardware devices may be more geared towards voice control, situational awareness, wearable technology, and real-time digital assistance, than touch screens, according to industry experts. Rather than repeatedly opening applications, users can just converse with an AI assistant that executes tasks automatically.

These can potentially revolutionize people’s daily lives in terms of how they use technology. AI assistants can even arrange meetings, provide a summary of emails, handle travel arrangements, answer questions promptly, and manage a smart home. Instead of manually looking up information, users could use the AI to continuously interact with them throughout the day.

This change could make the current smartphone ecosystems vulnerable. Currently, companies such as Apple and Samsung have both hardware and software environments, and thus have a lot of power over mobile computing. But, should AI be the main way that people interact with technology, then traditional operating systems and apps might not be so critical.

But don’t underestimate Apple, experts say. The company has proven itself time and time again in the capacity to get into product categories after the initial players and still end up owning the space via refinement and ecosystem integration. Apple tends to wait for technologies to come of age before unleashing highly refined versions suitable for mainstream masses.

For instance, there were foldable smartphones for years before Apple came into the picture. However, analysts have already predicted that Apple would be going head-to-head with the future foldable phones for its reputation of quality and user experience. The same trend may hold true for AI hardware. However, for now, Apple’s shortcomings in the generative AI space could be offset by the company’s extensive hardware, software, and services integration.

In the meantime, AI hardware competition will get fiercer all around the world. Smartphone manufacturers in China, in Korea and even in the United States are putting a large investment in integrating AI. AI’s shift from software applications to consumer-focused hardware could revolutionize the way personal computing is conducted in the coming decade.

This move can be an exciting yet uncertain period for consumers. While AI-driven gadgets offer enhanced convenience, productivity, and personalization, there are concerns regarding privacy, data security, surveillance, and reliance on automated systems. If AI hardware companies hope to reach mass adoption, they’ll have to pay close attention to these issues.

OpenAI’s plans, whether they involve a smartphone, a wearable gadget, or a whole new class of AI hardware, already indicate a significant paradigm change in the tech sector. Artificial Intelligence is no more limited to Chatbots and software’s. It’s quickly becoming the basis for the next generation of consumer electronics.

This is the second time that the smartphone industry has changed the world, after Apple launched the iPhone in 2007. The advent of AI-first devices may precipitate a new technological revolution, however – one in which artificial intelligence is the chief means by which humans interface with digital systems on a daily basis.

The global smartphone industry may be about to experience its biggest shake-up since the iPhone was introduced.
