It comes after the launch of Instagram Teen Accounts in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and Canada in October 2025. The new changes are aimed at making the Internet a safer and more suitable place for younger users to experience and making parents more comfortable seeing content presented to teenagers, the company says.

The main feature of the update is Meta’s default “13+” content setting, which automatically restricts the content type teens are able to see on its platforms. The setting is inspired by the film rating guidelines and feedback from parents and takes steps to minimise exposure to content that is not suitable for younger audiences. Meta says that 90% of the teens it sent to its default Instagram settings ended up keeping the protections.Based on these numbers, a large percentage of Instagram users—9 out of 10 teens who were sent to Instagram’s default setting—accepted the protections, the company said.

The rollout to the global audience will now feature Facebook Teen Accounts that automatically filter inappropriate content from parts of the Facebook app, like Feed and Reels, and limit interactions with profiles, pages, groups and events that regularly post mature content. Messenger is getting the same treatment: it won’t let teens click on links to bad content on Facebook and will limit communications with Facebook accounts associated with bad content. Additionally, Meta announced a “Limited Content” feature that is already present on Instagram would be available on Facebook and Messenger later this year.

The company has taken parent input into account heavily as it worked on these safeguards. Hundreds of thousands of parents have joined content rating programs around the world that have collectively rated over 15 million pieces of content, Meta says. A new survey of prominent English-speaking countries found that less than 2% of the recommended posts that teens received on Facebook were deemed inappropriate by the majority of parents involved. Meta says the findings are a sign that it is doing a better job providing age-appropriate experiences with its own content moderation systems.

In addition to content filtering, this new feature is being piloted to minimize repetitive exposure to certain content types on Instagram. The company acknowledges that, for teens, it can be beneficial to learn about nutrition, fitness, weightlifting or mental health; but feels that too much exposure to one particular topic might be an unhealthy experience. Instagram will moderate and moderate the frequency of similar content in the Feed, Reels and Explore, in order to create a balanced content environment under the new test.

Meta had an organization, called Alice, which specializes in online safety and adversarial testing, and had a testing project commissioned to evaluate its safety measures. The external assessment was made against a competitor’s “teen experience” and “content standards” found in a popular film rated for audiences 13 and over, as well as their Instagram Teen Accounts.

Meta’s results were good. The assessment found that Instagram Teen Accounts (default 13+ age rating) had 68% less mature content as compared to the competition. I think the differences in “mature content” were truly massive, with users who selected the more restrictive “Limited Content” setting experiencing 96% less of it. It was also discovered that when content does appear, it was typically not as strong as material it could be found elsewhere. In addition, Instagram was discovered to be more effective and stringent about enforcing restrictions on teens to change settings on their content without parental permission, and was found to block mature search terms more aggressively.

The evaluation also pinpointed the need for improvement. They found a few instances where people were posting age-inappropriate material that wasn’t being regulated. As a response to the release of its report, Meta has enhanced its detection across its systems and retest the safeguards prior to their publication. A second problem was the appearance of new fads: for example, the “car surfing” fad. The trend was not yet included in Instagram’s policies, although the social network had already limited content about dangerous actions like subway surfing. Meta was quick to revise its guidelines to close this loophole and to make sure that such posts aren’t recommended to teens.

Meta’s decision to launch Teen Accounts comes as part of a larger initiative to address the increasing concerns regarding youth safety, mental well-being, and the effects of social media on younger users. Technology firms are increasingly investing in age-appropriate design and content moderation, as regulators, parents and child safety advocates call for increased protections on digital platforms.

Meta admits there’s no such thing as a perfect system, but the company states it’ll keep on stress-testing its safeguards and will keep enhancing its strategy as online actions evolve. Meta believes this partnership will result in an online space that allows teens to explore, connect and learn without being exposed to harmful or inappropriate content by using a combination of parental input, automated tech and independent safety assessments.

With social media platforms under increasing pressure to keep teens safe, Meta’s new changes indicate that teen safety is a key part of the company’s long-term plan, not an add-on.

Meta Expands Teen Safety Features Across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger Worldwide On Instagram, Facebook and Messenger, worldwide, Meta will be rolling out new teen safety features with its new teen content controls in Teen Accounts.
