class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biggest design change that <a href=\"https:\/\/brightveins.com\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/brightveins.com\/\">YouTube<\/a> has been through in years, as it tries to get rid of some of the clutter, improve the usability, and clear up the experience of billions of users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">YouTube has grown into a massive entertainment platform over 20 years since its inception, with long-form videos, Shorts, live streams, shopping, music and premium subscriptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This growth however posed a big design problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New buttons and features were added year after year, the layout was not consistent, unnecessary pop-ups and complicated user experience were present on the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, YouTube is taking a different approach: removing complexity instead of adding more features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biggest design change that YouTube has announced in years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past year, Jonathan Terleski, design executive for YouTube, and his team have been working on what the company calls the biggest design overhaul in more than a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The idea is not to go full-bore visual rethink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">YouTube is instead pushing out hundreds of smaller enhancements that will make the platform easier and simpler to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The changes include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fewer unnecessary buttons<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cleaner navigation<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enhancements to the creator and user dashboards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Better uniformity of design aspects<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Better video-watching experiences<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Terleski says that YouTube is at a stage where the platform is too complex given its size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s not about more features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is what do users need?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is because YouTube became too complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was a time when YouTube was simple, when it was launched in 2005.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Users uploaded videos, watched the videos and interacted using simple comments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, in the course of 21 years, YouTube grew significantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the platform has:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 20 billion uploaded videos<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Billions of monthly users:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">YouTube Shorts<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">YouTube Premium<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">YouTube Shopping<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Live streaming<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Creator monetization tools<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Music content<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The introduction of each new feature brought with it extra controls and interface components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually, the design of YouTube became a series of discrete features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Due to the different teams, there were inconsistencies and separate experiences for each product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Developing Outside of the Feature-based Design<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the years, YouTube made a lot of products based on performance metrics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teams optimized for goal(s) of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More clicks<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Longer viewing sessions<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Higher engagement<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Increased subscriptions<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are all the objectives that YouTube has used for its growth, and they also lead to a more cluttered interface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company, however, found that optimising each individual measure could have a detrimental impact on the overall experience for the user.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new design philosophy is based on the premise that it asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat would YouTube be like if it had been built in 2011 with all the knowledge we have now?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a big paradigm change from feature overgrowth to simplicity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Design System for YouTube<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most significant internal changes took place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the past, design was done by various teams within YouTube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">YouTube Music had different design considerations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different teams for living room experiences<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mobile experiences were developed separately<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This resulted in inconsistencies between products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, YouTube is trying to move towards a more consistent design culture, in which teams work in concert with one another based on a set of shared principles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aim is to make YouTube work as one product, and not a bunch of products stitched and sewn together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The importance of making small changes that can make a big difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to YouTube, it&#8217;s the little things that can make the most impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some potential improvements are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cleaner Video Pages<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">YouTube&#8217;s most crucial experience is the watch page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company&#8217;s priority is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reducing distractions<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The significant actions will cosmetic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company considers design to be a business strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As competition grows from platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and streaming services, holding on to users is increasingly challenging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">User interface confusion can lead to lost changes are meant to remove unnecessary complexity, without altering existing behavior, this should be done with care, and with testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">YouTube must doesn&#8217;t need to be the most feature rich for it to be a better experience \u2014 it needs to be the easiest place to find what users want without having to think about the
