Meta adds more parental supervision tools to Instagram for teens

Meta has announced a series of new parental supervision tools for Instagram that will give parents more insight into how their teen uses content on Instagram. The changes, which form part of Meta’s existing “Teen Accounts” initiative, are designed to give families more insight into the things that are influencing a teen’s social media experience, and provide more tools for parents to manage healthy online behavior.

The updates come in the wake of expanding worries for both youth safety and well-being and transparency in social media. Meta aims to build a more informed and collaborative way for parents to supervise their teens’ content recommendations by providing more information on the topics that affect them.

The topics parents will see that impact their teen’s feed

Among the biggest changes – one that parents will be happy about – is the ability to see the general categories of content teens see on Instagram.

Parents can now use the platform’s parental supervision tools to view the general interests of their kids, including their interest in sports, fashion, music, fitness, gaming, travel, art or education. The feature is not designed to show individual posts or messages or account interactions, rather, it is designed around higher level topic categories that explain what types of content feed into a teen’s recommendation algorithm.

For instance, if a parent notices that their teen is often interacting with basketball, photography, fitness training, fashion trends, or other topics, this indicates a positive sign. Information will be given to provide context around a teen’s digital interests and not reveal private conversations or detailed activity histories.

Meta notes that the feature is supposed to be a balance between being aware of their teen’s behavior and keeping it private, and it will show broad trends instead of individualized records of behavior.

New Algorithm Preference Change notifications

Meta is also working on another feature that will further help to boost transparency over the personalization of recommendation systems.

Over the next few weeks, users will be notified when their teen has actively added a new category of interests to Instagram’s recommendation system. The feature follows Instagram’s “Your Algorithm” controls that were rolled out earlier this year to allow users to have more control over what they see.

With the feature, people can make it more or less likely to see topics they prefer or dislike in their feeds, Explore pages, and recommendations. If the teen selects to follow or “wise up” a new interest area, the parent(s) in supervision situations will be notified.

Meta says these alerts are designed to prompt parents and teens to talk about their digital hobbies, content and online experiences.

The company says that the feature isn’t a monitoring tool, but one that helps to promote communication and awareness.

Teen Accounts Will Still Have Tighter Content Restrictions

The new parental insights are in addition to the protections offered as part of Instagram’s Teen Accounts program.

To offer a safer and more age-appropriate experience, Teen Accounts were introduced. With these settings, content recommendations will not be as wide as that of an adult account.

Meta claims that teens cannot pick some categories of sensitive content to customize their algorithms. The type of content that can be shown to teens tends to be geared towards younger people and follows guidelines similar to those that a PG-13 rated movie might follow.

To minimize exposure to potentially harmful, explicit, or inappropriate content within supervised teen experiences, the company continues to rely on automated systems and policy enforcement mechanisms.

These precautions aim to minimise risk while enabling teens to explore their interests, engage in their communities, and discover relevant content.

Creating a single parental dashboard for families

Meta is also introducing new features in its parental control tool Family Center, in addition to Instagram-related updates.

In the past, supervision settings for various Meta services could be managed individually. Now the company is bringing parental controls to all of its platforms together in one place.

Meta Horizon

This streamlined approach makes it easier to manage accounts and decreases the intricacy of managing multiple services.

Parents no longer have to set up supervision on each individual platform and have a unified view of their teen’s activity throughout Meta’s ecosystem.

Easy to set up supervision, across multiple apps

Meta is also making it easier to set up parental supervision. In the past, parents had to establish monitoring relationships on a per-application basis. With the new system, parents can now send one invitation to supervise multiple Meta platforms.

The switch helps alleviate setup friction and allows families to enable supervision features more easily without going through multiple approvals.

The streamlined process underscores Meta’s goal of boosting the adoption of features that are already available to increase safety for users, while also reducing administrative burden.

Additional Well-Being Insights on Digital Are on the Way

Meta has said it is working on more parental control tools. One of the proposed improvements is that the new system will give parents aggregate reports of how much time a teenager has spent with all of the Meta apps, instead of having to check each app individually.

These reports will provide a larger picture view of overall digital activity patterns and screen time habits.

Additional future updates may feature more data on platform usage patterns, engagement metrics, and other features to help build healthy technology habits.

Meta has not given a timeline for when all the features will be available, but it states they’ll start to roll out in the coming months.

This is a cross-industry shift toward a greater emphasis on teen safety

The news comes at a time when there’s growing concern about the use of social media for younger audiences.

The world’s governments, regulators, educators and parents have been demanding increased safeguards on content suggestions, screen time, privacy, and online safety. In turn, social media companies have introduced new parental controls, age-appropriate experience, content restrictions and transparency measures.

The launch of Meta’s Teen Accounts initiative marks one of its biggest investments in safety infrastructure for the youth. As with previous updates, this one continues to show parents a way to get valuable information without taking away a lot of the independence and privacy of their teens.

The new features do not give parents access to each and every interaction, but rather patterns and interests that affect algorithmic recommendations.
