  • Anthropic acquired Stainless to strengthen AI developer tools and app infrastructure.
  • Stainless technology is widely used by major AI firms including OpenAI and Google.
  • The deal could reshape the AI developer ecosystem and intensify competition in AI infrastructure.

Anthropic has announced its acquisition of software infrastructure company Stainless, a rapidly growing startup whose technology is utilized by leading AI firms such as OpenAI, Google, Cloudflare, Replicate, and Runway, among others, in a major development that has the potential to transform the AI developer landscape. The buy underscores the vital role of developer tools in the fast-paced AI landscape and Anthropic’s dedication to empowering its platform for AI-driven app development.

Although Anthropic did not officially disclose the financial terms of the transaction, industry reports suggest the deal may be worth more than $300 million. The deal introduces one of the most impactful API development platforms under Anthropic’s direct control and simultaneously de facto cuts out one of the important technology providers from the arms of competing AI firms.

What Is Stainless?

Stainless, which was founded in 2022 by former Stripe engineer Alex Rattray, soon became a top software development kit (SDK) automation tool provider.

A software development kit (SDK) is the link between the developer and application programming interfaces (APIs) and helps the program developer integrate the services into their application without having to deal with all the technical aspects of the integration. SDKs in different programming languages can be a burden, especially when APIs change and get updated.

Stainless addressed this challenge by building technology to automatically generate and maintain SDKs directly from API specifications. It provides support for various programming languages, such as Python, TypeScript, Java, Kotlin, and Go, which allows developers to use APIs efficiently with their technology of choice.

APIs evolve with time, and Stainless automatically updates its SDKs, thus minimizing potential compatibility problems and manual maintenance efforts. This automation greatly speeds up software development and enhances reliability and consistency.

The Essentials of AI: Why Stainless is a must-have for AI Companies

Over the past few years, as AI platforms grew quickly, the ability to use them by developers became a key part of their market success. APIs play a crucial role in the distribution of access to AI models and services by AI providers.

Developers can integrate AI models into their applications and workflows more easily by using these SDKs, which are provided by companies like OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, Runway, Replicate, and Cloudflare.

Keeping developer tools in sync with quickly evolving AI capabilities was one of the most challenging parts of API management, so the value of stainless became especially apparent.

For organisations, instead of manually creating and maintaining SDKs for each of the various programming languages, they could use Stainless to generate production-ready libraries automatically and keep them up-to-date when APIs changed.

With AI firms releasing model, features, and endpoints at an ever-accelerating rate, Stainless became an essential infrastructure component to developer ecosystems throughout the AI industry.

Anthropic’s Longstanding Relationship with Stainless

The two companies have had a connection since the very beginning of the Anthropic API, according to Anthropic.

Since the launch of its developer platform, “Stainless technology has underpinned all of the company’s official Anthropic SDKs,” the company announced. Anthropic’s decision to partner with Stainless is a testament to the long-term relationship that likely gave the company a comprehensive understanding of the technology and operational strength of Stainless.

“There has been a strong partnership between the organizations,” said Alex Rattray in a statement announcing the acquisition.

“Anthropic was one of the first companies to adopt Stainless’s SDK automation strategy,” he said, “and the developers’ innovations that have resulted from Claude-powered applications in the past few years are remarkable.”

The acquisition is thus not just a strategic investment in technology, but also the formalisation of a partnership that is already proving to be a success.

Customer impact of the situation

Perhaps most surprisingly about the deal is that Anthropic has decided to end Stainless’s commercial hosted products.

Anthropic has announced that it is winding down the services such as Anthropic’s SDK generation platform. Consequently, competitors formerly using Stainless infrastructure will no longer be able to access the hosted tooling from now on.

Anthropic, however, said that people who have already used the platform to create SDKs will still own them. Those SDKs are free to continue to be used, modified and extended by developers and organizations independently.

Current integrations will continue to work but future automated updates and platform support will not be provided via Stainless as a standalone service.

The move essentially makes Stainless an in-house tech resource solely for Anthropic’s operations.

Strategic Advantages for Anthropic

The deal comes with a number of strategic advantages for Anthropic.

Improved Developer Experience (DevX)

One of the key growth drivers of AI platforms is developer adoption. The control over the technology that powers the generation of SDKs allows Anthropic to streamline the API integration process, speed up updates, and enhance the developer experience for anyone using Claude.

Faster Product Innovation

With the acquisition of Stainless, Anthropic has the ability to seamlessly integrate SDK generation into its product development process. New features and model capabilities can be immediately represented across supported programming languages, no external vendors required.

Competitive Differentiation

The move also gives them a competitive edge as it takes one of the best-in-class infrastructure providers off the list of their competitors.

Organizations that have been using Stainless may require an investment in alternative solutions and/or internal SDK management system, which may add complexity to operations and development costs.

Supporting Agent-Based Ecosystems

With the growing ability of AI agents to communicate with external applications and services, API infrastructure is becoming even more important.

By leveraging stainless technology, Anthropic can enhance its integration with other platforms and services, allowing for more advanced automation and agentic solutions.

Broader Industry Implications

The deal is a sign of an emerging trend in the AI industry – that control over underlying infrastructure can be as significant as model performance.

The developer ecosystem, integration frameworks, and deployment infrastructure are often what drives the long-term success of an AI platform, a fact the world here is now starting to recognize, with most of its attention wrapped up in benchmark results and model capabilities.

The transfer of Stainless allows Anthropic to directly own a technology layer currently used by thousands of developers, and it will enable the interoperability between AI systems and external software environments.

The acquisition could also prompt other AI firms to assess their reliance on third-party infrastructure service providers and explore vertical integration options.

Looking Ahead

Anthropic’s acquisition of Stainless is more than just a technology buy. It reflects the company’s commitment to investing in all aspects of its AI business, spanning the base models to tools for developers and deployment of applications.

With the growing capabilities of AI agents and the growing adoption of businesses to use API-driven automation, seamless SDK generation and maintenance will continue to be a key part of software development. By making Stainless an in-house asset, Anthropic will have more control over this critical infrastructure and may speed up the pace of innovation in its Claude platform.

The deal highlights the rising significance of tooling and ecosystem support in the AI sector for developers. Anthropic’s rivals are reminded that the pursuit of AI supremacy is not just about creating the smarter AI models but also about exerting control over the infrastructure that allows developers to fully leverage them.
