Highlights
  • Cursor launched Cursor Start, a ₹649/month India-specific subscription to make AI coding tools more affordable for local developers.
  • India has become a key growth market for Cursor due to its massive developer community and increasing AI adoption.
  • The company is expanding its Indian operations while preparing for its expected SpaceX acquisition and future global growth.

Cursor is making its largest India push ever with localised pricing in the run up to an acquisition by SpaceX. As the demand for AI-powered software development tools beckons, India has emerged as one of the most significant markets for AI businesses. Seizing the opportunity, AI coding startup Cursor has announced its largest expansion in India to date with a country-specific subscription plan tailored for the Indian coding community.

The decision comes just weeks ahead of Cursor’s anticipated acquisition by SpaceX that’s expected to close, and shows the company’s desire to beef up in one of the world’s largest developer ecosystems. India is home to millions of software engineers, a thriving startup ecosystem, and a rising trend of AI tool adoption, making it a huge opportunity for Cursor.

The new subscription, known as Cursor Start, provides a more accessible and cost-effective option for Indian developers to access robust AI coding support, while also presenting a lower cost than Cursor’s global subscription service.

Cursor launches its India-only subscription plan

Cursor Start is a subscription plan priced at ₹649/month, or about $7, that the company launched on Monday. The plan is also much less expensive than the regular Pro subscription the Cursor offers at $20 per month.

This is the first time Cursor has come up with a country specific pricing model which reiterates the significance of India in the company’s future growth plans.

India is already the third biggest market in the world, and the country has the highest percentage of power users, Cursor said. The company also noted that its user base in India too has more than tripled during the last 12 months.

With the localized pricing, the company can offer AI coding support tools to a wider range of developers who wish to have more than the free version offers but do not necessarily require the full features of the Pro subscription.

Why India matters to Cursor’s Growth Strategy

India has rapidly emerged as one of the world’s biggest software development markets. This is a huge technology talent pool, thousands of startups, and a growing interest in tools that boost productivity with the use of AI.

As India’s developer community continues to expand, there’s also been a high demand for platforms to make it easier for developers to write, test and enhance code quicker.

Simon Green, Cursor head for Asia-Pacific/Japan region, said that India was chosen as the first place for localised pricing due to the technical talent and developer community in the country.

The company has a strong conviction that India is the perfect base to grow AI coding usage as developers have familiarity with high-tech tools.

Developers are also coming on board with all the development platforms which is also a sign of the importance of India. Previously, GitHub has pointed out that India is home to one of the biggest developer communities in the world, having tens of millions of developers on the platform.

It can help Indian developers with the following:

At a lower cost, Cursor Start offers developers several AI-driven coding capabilities.

The subscription includes:

Get access to Cursor’s Composer 2.5 model.

Access to Grok 4.5.

Increased usage limits than the free plan.

Coding agents in the cloud.

iOS application access.

Plugin support.

Support for Model Context Protocol.

Hooks and Skills feature.

The plan caters to developers seeking greater AI capabilities than the free tier offers, yet not fully utilizing the extensive range of features offered by Cursor Pro.

Other more advanced functions, however, are not included with Cursor Start, and are reserved for the more expensive subscription.

These are the features that are not included:

Availability of some frontier AI models, such as those developed by Anthropic and OpenAI.

Bugbot.

Auto Mode.

Automations.

Cursor SDK access.

Cursor isn’t planning on replacing its paid subscription, but wants to reach more devs, it says.

Payment Support and Regional Availability: The payment support is given based on the availability of the area.

The payment of Cursor Start is in INR, which helps the local users to subscribe without currency conversion.

The subscription allows people to pay using common Indian payment methods such as:

Credit cards.

Debit cards.

Unified Payments Interface (UPI).

Cursor is also implementing verification measures to ensure that the India-specific subscription is available only to users located in the country.

The company is seeking to implement several checks to block access to the plan from outside India using means like VPN.

AI Firms Turn their Attention to India

The launch of Cursor in India is part of a bigger pattern within the international artificial intelligence sector.

With a vast internet user base, a thriving developer community, and a rising number of enterprises embracing AI, India has emerged as a key battleground for AI platforms.

Other big AI companies have also launched their pricing policies in India.

OpenAI and Anthropic have introduced strategies aimed at reducing the cost of AI services for Indian users.

The approach can enable companies to gain new customers in emerging markets and to provide paid subscription opportunities in the future.

Similarly, Cursor’s strategy involves launching offers in local markets, specifically in India, and then potentially rolling them out across more countries.

The current plan is to use Cursor to make local pricing available globally.

Currently only available in India, Cursor Start has proposed that other markets may have similar pricing models if the Indian model is successful.

Simon Green said the firm would keep on looking at ways to support developers and the increasing demand.

India may be a testbed for a global pricing model

A similar path has been followed by other tech firms. For instance, OpenAI’s ChatGPT Go subscription is initially available at a reduced cost in India and will be rolling out in other regions.

This shows the evolving role of India in the global technology agendas.

The company is expanding its operations in India.

In addition to pricing changes, Cursor is also ramping up its footprint in India.

The company has begun to hire local personnel to cater to its ever increasing customer base. The most recent expansion efforts have involved:

To employ its first salesperson in India.

Planning for more leadership positions in Delhi.

Development of government relations operations.

Adding technical customer support employees.

Additionally, Cursor is growing in key tech centers such as:

Bengaluru.

Chennai.

Hyderabad.

Mumbai.

These cities are among India’s biggest technology hubs and offer a vast developer and enterprise customer base.

Opportunities in India

Cursor’s existing traction in India has been largely with individual developers, startups, and universities; the company believes that there is significant opportunity in the enterprise market.

The company is looking at growth avenues in various sectors like:

Banking.

Financial services.

Large technology organizations.

Enterprise software teams.

As businesses continue to rely on AI tools to boost productivity, AI coding assistants have the potential to be a significant part of software development processes.

Cursor believes that the expansion into India will lead it to be able to build better partnerships with businesses, while maintaining its relationship with individual developers.

SpaceX’s Plans for the Future and the Acquisition of Other Companies

The moves by Cursor come in the wake of SpaceX agreeing to acquire the AI coding startup in a $60 billion all-stock deal.

The acquisition is expected to close in the third quarter, but Cursor will continue to operate independently until then.

SpaceX has already partnered with Cursor on developing next-generation AI tools focused on coding and knowledge work.

SpaceX already has a presence in India with Starlink, and this partnership might help Cursor grow more rapidly, offering extra support for operations.

But, Cursor’s leadership said that the strategy of expansion into India was also well laid out prior to the acquisition announcement.

A New Phase for AI Coding Tools

The price strategy announced by Cursor for India underscores the evolving AI software development landscape.

As a growing number of developers are implementing AI assistants, companies are seeking to make these tools accessible for various markets and economic conditions.

With its large developer population, India is an important market for AI companies seeking to expand globally.

With its accessible pricing, local payment options, and regional expansion, Cursor is poised for a strong presence in the booming AI coding sector.

The company’s India move also shows a wider trend in the technology industry: successful AI platforms will have to introduce new products and new pricing models to suit the wide variety of global uses.
