Neowin has reported that the Outlook Lite app will still launch on Android devices past the date of shutdown, but it won’t be functional. It will no longer be possible to access the mailbox, and users won’t be able to navigate within the app either. Put simply, will be still installed on your devices, but it won’t be usable for email management and viewing.

What Is Outlook Lite?

Outlook Lite was released as a basic version of Microsoft Outlook. The app was targeted at users who had older Android devices, low storage devices, or below average internet speeds.

Users in emerging markets liked the Lite edition as it took up smaller storage space, required fewer system resources, and offered a simple email service without all the advanced functionality of Outlook.

Outlook Lite provided a solution for low-end device users to access Microsoft email accounts like Outlook, Hotmail and other linked accounts.

Why Is Microsoft Discontinuing Outlook Lite?

While Microsoft hasn’t provided all the details, here are some possible reasons.

1. Emphasise the Main Outlook App

It’s common for tech companies to consolidate product offerings to invest in a single primary app rather than several different versions. Moving away from Outlook Lite may be a way for Microsoft to push users towards the full Outlook app.

2. Improved Android Devices

Budget Android phones are more capable these days. The newer low-end devices are often faster, have more storage, and faster network connections, diminishing the need for low-weight apps.

3. Simpler Updating and Security

Supporting multiple apps means more devolved development, testing and security. Focusing on the Outlook app may enable quicker and more efficient updates.

What Will Happen on May 25?

If Outlook Lite users continue to use the app after May 25, they’ll experience:

  • The app will open as usual
  • You won’t be able to access your mailbox
  • Emails will not sync or load
  • In-app navigation may fail
  • Key functions may stop working
  • So the app will simply no longer be useful.

Who Will Be Affected?

This only affects Android users of Outlook Lite. It does not affect:

  • The regular Microsoft Outlook Android app
  • Outlook on iPhone or iPad
  • Outlook on desktop computers
  • Outlook web access through web browsers
  • If you are already using the full Outlook app, there’s nothing to be concerned about.

What Should Users Do Now?

If you are one of the users of Outlook Lite, it’s a good time to get ready before May 25. Here are some practical steps:

Switch to the Main Outlook App

The simplest way is to install the Microsoft Outlook app from the Google Play Store. This will provide you with all the email features, calendar, junk mail filter and more.

Back Up Important Data

Ensure your emails, contacts and settings are all up-to-date. Most Outlook accounts are cloud-based, so you shouldn’t have any trouble switching apps, but double-check if needed.

Check Device Compatibility

If you have an older phone or limited storage space, clear some space before downloading the full Outlook app.

Consider Alternatives

If you don’t need all the features of the full Outlook app, you can consider using Gmail or other lightweight email apps that support Microsoft accounts.

What Does This Means for Users?

Outlook Lite’s demise is part of a broader shift in mobile apps. App providers are decreasing Lite or Go versions of their apps as low-end mobile devices become more powerful.

But it could have impacts for some users with old devices. For these users, lightweight apps are important because they consume less data, memory and processing power.

Final Thoughts

Microsoft’s announcement that Outlook Lite will stop working after May 25 marks the end of a helpful app for those on older Android phones. Although the app will remain functional, its core features will no longer work, requiring a move.

If you rely on Outlook Lite, consider migrating to the main Outlook app or another email provider. By preparing now, you can avoid downtime and keep receiving emails.
