Highlights
  • Google introduced a redesigned Gemini AI experience at I/O 2026.
  • Gemini 3.5 Flash brings stronger reasoning, coding, and AI agent capabilities.
  • Google is focusing on both AI performance and better user experience.

At Google I/O 2026, Google has announced a significant leap forward for its Gemini artificial intelligence platform, with a new visual redesign and a much more powerful AI model. These enhancements are part of Google’s overall efforts to make AI smarter, more intuitive, and more embedded into everyday digital experiences. The company is striving to improve user interaction with AI, across smartphones, desktops and the web, with the introduction of its new “Neural Expressive” design language and the rollout of Gemini 3.5 Flash.

The new improvements arrive at a time when AI companies are stepping up competition. With businesses striving to create more intelligent and capable AI assistants, the emphasis has shifted from model performance to user experience. Google’s latest Gemini releases tackle both of these issues at once, offering users a new UI as well as improved reasoning, coding, and agent capabilities.

An Artificial Intelligence (AI) Driven approach to design, color, and texture

Perhaps one of the most obvious new things for Google’s Gemini is its reimagined appearance, dubbed “Neural Expressive.” The new UI incorporates smooth animation, attractive color schemes, improved typography and responsive haptics to make interactions more natural and engaging.

The revamped layout features a prominent and convenient ‘Ask Gemini’ input bar, enabling users to easily kickstart conversations with the AI assistant. There are also minor gradient effects in the interface, which are in line with Google’s overall design philosophy over the past few years across many of its interfaces.

AI interactions, the company feels, should not be so mechanical and more like a conversation. Google’s adjustments aim to make the experience more comfortable and efficient for users to interact with Gemini, as they evolve the visual aspects and transitions between actions.

The redesign of the Neural Expressive is being implemented on Android, iPhones, iPads, and the web platform, providing a seamless experience regardless of the device used.

Gemini Live becomes an integral part of the experience

Another big improvement is Google’s voice conversation feature called, Gemini Live. Previously a stand-alone mode, Gemini Live is now part of the main Gemini chat user interface.

Users can transition seamlessly from text to voice and back, with just a click of the Gemini Live button next to the Ask Gemini text box. This integration eliminates the need to switch to a different screen and enables conversations to go more naturally between speech and typing.

The transition is indicative of the trend growing in the industry for multimodal AI experiences. Modern AI Assistants now allow for more than just text-based prompts, including voice, images, videos and even more. Google’s integration of Gemini Live right into the primary conversation interface suggests that voice communication will be an integral part of the Gemini experience.

This integration also allows for more dynamic and natural interactions, allowing users to ask follow-up questions, clarify instructions, and engage in real-time discussions without disrupting workflow.

More Richer and Personalized Response

Google is also refining the way that Gemini presents information. The new assistant can now provide more complex and visually rich responses, such as images, timelines, charts, videos and other contextual information.

Google says that Gemini will now offer more personalized answers to queries, depending on the specific request and what the user needs to know. For instance, an interactive timeline could be included with historical topics, visual explanations with educational topics, and a structured layout and access to multimedia tools with planning tasks.

These more enriched responses are designed to enhance understanding and increase interaction and productivity. The ability to use multiple content formats in one answer is a sign of the growing value of multimodal AI systems capable of conveying information in various ways.

The performance of this Gemini 3.5 Flash is higher than ever before

Along with its visual enhancements, Google has also announced a new AI model for its Gemini offering called “Google Gemini 3.5 Flash”. This AI model promises to provide even greater intelligence, while maintaining speed and efficiency.

According to Google, the new Gemini 3.5 Flash model is its best yet for agentic tasks and coding. Agentic AI is the ability for an AI system to complete tasks, access tools, and carry out multi-step workflows on its own, with limited human oversight.

According to the company, Gemini 3.5 Flash is designed to strike the perfect balance between performance and responsiveness, especially when dealing with lengthy and intricate interactions. The model is built to keep context and function properly on long running tasks whether users are writing software, managing projects, analysing information or coordinating workflows.

Gemini 3.5 Flash enhances reasoning capabilities, enabling it to more effectively understand instructions, decompose goals, and carry out complex requests than previous versions.

Improved Coding and Development Skills

A particular focus is on software development. Coding is one of the most critical uses of high-performing AI models; according to Google, Gemini 3.5 Flash is the most capable coding model they’ve built so far.

The model can help developers to write code, debug software, build applications, check implementations, and explain technical concepts. The AI can now interact with development environments more effectively thanks to enhanced tool usage capabilities, and execute tasks beyond just code generation.

By enhancing these capabilities, Gemini is poised to become a more competitive offering in the fast-changing landscape of AI-powered software development tools, where developers are increasingly turning to intelligent assistants to streamline their workflows and boost productivity.

Transforming AI Agents with the Next Generation of Power

The Gemini 3.5 Flash is also the basis of Google’s recently introduced personal AI agent, Gemini Spark. Spark functions constantly in the background via cloud-based virtual machines and can sync with services like Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides and some select third party apps.

Spark can handle scheduling, summarize information, generate documents, stay up to date on crucial updates, and automate repetitive tasks, thanks to the intelligence of Gemini 3.5 Flash and access to user data and productivity tools.

Google is convinced agent-based AI systems will become a key part of its users’ productivity, enabling them to hand over more menial tasks in favor of more important ones.

An exit towards Gemini 3.5 Pro

Google already has its next step in the works as the Gemini application and AI Mode in Search switches to the new Gemini 3.5 Flash as the default model. The company said it was working on the development of Gemini 3.5 Pro and that it will be publicly available in June.

The next flagship model is expected to increase the reasoning capabilities, multimodal understanding, and sophistication of agent behavior. Google has said it is doing further safety testing before it launches.

Conclusion

Google’s newest release of the Gemini is a major leap in the advancement of user AI technology. A refreshed and more interactive UI streamlines the user experience for the Neural Expressive, while the integration of Gemini Live and the addition of multimedia responses make conversations more natural and engaging.

Meanwhile, Gemini 3.5 Flash boasts significant enhancements in reasoning, coding, and automated task completion, paving the way for more powerful AI assistants and productivity applications. Google’s efforts to build the Gemini ecosystem and gear up for the upcoming launch of Gemini 3.5 Pro signal a strong commitment to developing a platform that will be integral to its overall artificial intelligence strategy and a significant player in the rapidly changing AI market.
