Highlights
  • Google has open-sourced TorchTPU, which will help PyTorch applications run more easily on the TPUs.
  • Amazon is encouraging the use of TorchNeuron to run PyTorch applications on Trainium.
  • Both are looking to lessen reliance on Nvidia's hardware.
  • More hardware choices in the future may be available for AI developers with greater hardware flexibility.
  • Nvidia continues to be a strong competitor largely thanks to its well-developed GPU and software ecosystem.

Google and Amazon are challenging Nvidia’s dominance in AI hardware.  The two technology firms are making it easier for AI developers to run applications on their own chips, rather than using Nvidia GPUs to the exclusion of others.

Google’s latest step is to open-source TorchTPU, a modified version of PyTorch intended to enable AI applications to be deployed on Google’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs).

Google has introduced PyTorch for its TPU Platform

PyTorch is an open-source framework that is widely used for creating, training and deploying AI models. PyTorch is a key component of a lot of modern AI tools and solutions, so hardware businesses can’t overlook its compatibility.

Given that Nvidia GPUs have been well supported for years by PyTorch, AI developers will frequently develop applications on Nvidia equipment. This has put Nvidia in a robust position in the AI space.

Google’s TorchTPU is meant to offer an alternative for developers. It enables you to run PyTorch applications with minimal changes on Google TPUs. The developers can gradually shift their applications to Google Cloud without requiring to rewrite their current application code. This may make Google’s AI tooling more appealing to PyTorch users and startups.

Amazon Is Taking a Similar Approach

Google is only one of the big cloud firms taking on Nvidia. Amazon has launched TorchNeuron, a new tool to facilitate the deployment of AI applications built on PyTorch on Amazon’s custom AI chips, such as Trainium. In the same way as Google, the idea is to enable the developers to port their AI workloads to alternative hardware, without having to rework their applications from scratch.

Amazon is also making changes to the core of the PyTorch ecosystem. Its work includes making some of its capabilities independent of Nvidia-specific hardware requirements to make PyTorch more hardware agnostic.

This work may make it easier for developers to pick AI chips that offer the best performance, cost, and availability, without having to tie their choice to a single chip brand.

Google Focuses on the Wider AI Developer Ecosystem

Additionally, Google is trying to make TorchTPU compatible with the tools that developers use to create and deploy AI applications.

The company has collaborated with organizations and developers related to popular AI technologies and frameworks such as Meta, Hugging Face, vLLM, and SGLang. The goal is to keep the migration from the legacy PyTorch environment to Google TPUs as simple as possible.

Google has also released a new TPU agent suite to help developers when switching their applications to Google’s TPU infrastructure. The tools can be used to detect and correct issues that can occur during the migration.

The company has also enhanced the LiteRT technology to ensure greater support for AI applications based on PyTorch on other devices like embedded systems, laptops and smartphones.

Nvidia Still Has a Major Advantage

However, even with all this, Google and Amazon are not going to take over AI market of Nvidia in the immediate future.

Nvidia has developed a strong ecosystem around their GPUs, software, development tools, libraries, and hardware. Its technology has been used by developers in the past and many AI workloads have been optimized on Nvidia’s platform.

Just making software compatible with other chips will not ensure the developers’ change.

All of these factors from performance to pricing, availability, software support, developer experience and cloud integration will impact future hardware choices.

A More Competitive AI Hardware Market

The greater significance of the Google and Amazon actions is that AI developers are getting additional hardware alternatives.

Nvidia GPUs have been the go-to choice for numerous AI tasks for years. Google TPUs and Amazon Trainium offer competing infrastructure, and now both offer ways to minimize the number of lines that need to be modified to port applications between platforms.

Continuing these efforts may make the AI hardware market more competitive. Developers will be able to develop applications based on frameworks like PyTorch and select the hardware or cloud platform to meet their needs.
